Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge - Elko, NV

Past alterations for agricultural purposes have caused declines in the habitat values of many wetland resources.  Ruby Lake NWR is no exception.  Originally established in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 40,000-acre Refuge is a critical habitat to migrating waterfowl.  USFWS recently purchased Station Springs Ranch, a historic property at the southern end of the refuge.  Nearby was the site of an old Pony Express outpost.  Some of the natural spring channels have been excavated, channelized, and ponded for a variety of purposes.  USFWS proposes these alterations be restored to historic condition.  The urgency for this action is due to presence of non-native crayfish and predatory fish within the ponds that threaten populations of endangered relic dace downstream.

Spring Rivers Ecological Sciences (Associates of StreamWise) propose actions to eradicate the non-native species and restore the natural habitat and channel features are expected to begin in summer of 2009.
